Heavily, really work-polished Illinois Spade. While not the longest spade ever seen (4.75",by 3" by 1') you'll seldom see a spade with this much work gloss. The top end is NOT broken, this is the way the piece was made--the Mississippian Culture knapper, quarried the high grade Mill Creek Chert from the Union or Johnson County, transported it back to the Edwards--Wabash County, Illinois, village, fashioned as long of a spade as was possible. The on-end photo should show the particularly heavy wear polish where the wooden handle & lashings rubbed the attachment end. Again, I've hunted at least one source creek for this chert, experience has allowed me to handle a number of Mill Creek tools--this is in the top few (highest silicate) forms of the flint I've encountered. The collector who found the spade, now deceased, hunted from the Wabash River to the next county, in-land--my experience with Mississippians, their villages hugged the rivers, so my presumption is that this was a Wabash County, Illinois, find. REAL. Shipping is $10.00. I welcome checks, cash, or M.O.s but do not use paypal--Roy A.
