A Stilwell with a 'main face' trait you just don't see on Early Archaic Stilwell points-- a half-length flute. What's a puzzle is that at the single thickest spot my caliper barely goes over 1/4"--so why flute the piece, it wasn't necessary. What I've asked myself is whether the Stilwell was made from a fluted point--a Paleo point. If so, the knapper did a masterful job of converting an auriculate base point into an expanded stem Stilwell. The reverse face shows only one very thin 'thinning flake', so that may mean the flute was original to the Stilwell, the piece was a converted earlier style point, but can I explain that flute--NO. Length of the 'cherty' possibly lightly heat-treated chert is 2&5/16" by 13/16". "Tan chert" is about as accurate a chert type classification as I'll attempt. History: the piece was found in the Evansville, Indiana, area, it's well patinated, shows only a small tip chip in so far as damage, and the basal edge is decently ground--not heavy grinding, but definitely ground, and the blade edges show the serration of many Stilwell points. Shipping is $8.00, and payment can only be by check, cash, or M.O. as I do not use payment services (like paypal)--Roy A.
