The Indiana auction this beveled-edge piece came from was appraised by J. Davis--he called this one a Turkey Tail, so that's what title the auction used. It ain't. The thing is, though, Harahey blades (Mississippian Culture) do not have a tiny notched base--maybe there IS one somewhere, but I've never seen it. Early Ovoid Blades, they like to use a base that's sort of 'odd' to begin with--some being what we'd think of as far too small for the large size of the blade--wobbling of the big blade would make it hard to use. Again, there is not a hard-and-fast rule with Early Ovoids (AKA Perino Knives)--this blade being 4&7/16" by 1&1/8", and only 1/4" max thickness. "Walk around it" with your screen, note the heavily beveled edges...and those long outre pas flakes that form the center of each face--see what you make of it. Have a good, warm fall weekend--Roy A.
