A colorful, glossy Kaolin Flint, the point from the Union County, Illinois, area. Made in the Early Archaic period, his Hardin was made strictly as a knife--see the on-edge photo, you'll understand---the piece of flint selected had several 'stacks', thick spots that the ancient knapper couldn't thin. It may be the blade was actually much wider, and attempting to narrow and thin the blade proved impossible. Then again, it could have been a flint scrap given to a young knapper to practice on--that was my first thought when I saw the thickness (5/8" max thickness)--that's a huge number, a Hardin of this size (almost 3") should be no more than 3/8" max thickness. Finish-out traits like basal grinding are present--not heavily ground, but it IS ground, and the tip area shows some excellent pressure flaking as the piece was used and repeatedly sharpened. One other characteristic to note is a thin thinning flake much like a flute that runs up one face; that took some skill. Neat piece, real. Shipping is $6.00 with checks, cash, or <.O.s welcomed. Sorry, I do not use paypal on my store--Roy A.
