At the risk of sounding 1970s ish--Cool piece--found near Princeton, Gibson County, Indiana, some years back--is it an Adz, a spade, or a flint Celt--or all of the above? The bit is beveled, and from the work polish on the flat side of the bit this piece of Mill Creek (southern Illinois chert) chopper saw action either chopping into sandy soil or hollowing out a dugout canoe--abrasion, repeated work strokes over a long period of time polished that bit. Length is 5&1/8" by 2"--3/4" max thickness--one end has a look like a pickax--pointed to dig into soil--and also work polished, so the Woodland/ Mississippian Culture user was working both ends. There is so much work polish along the blade edges that figuring how the piece was fitted to a handle is difficult--right at the mid point is an indention on one side, so I suspect that's where lashings (sinew) wrapped the handle (either a forked or an "L" shaped handle)--I would think a forked handle, but that's speculation from an old gardener, lol. Guaranteed real, period. $7.00 shipping, checks or M.O>s welcomed. Sorry, I do not use paypal--Roy A.
