Knapped by a Woodland user--Hopewell Culture--from a curved flake of our Indiana Hornstone--the flint source not too many Ohio river miles upstream from where this Perry County, Indiana, find was picked up. Length is 2&5/16" by 1&5/8"--was it ever longer, or was the blunted (hafted scraper) end made originally--the patina matches, so every detail goes back to the Hopewell Period that ended some fifteen hundred years BP. One note--the base was deliberately polished so it'd easily 'stand' on a handle, not cut into the wood (or possibly antler handle)--they ground that base. Sometimes Hopewell used grinding, but not often. Most of the flaking here is percussion work, but they did some fine pressure chipping of the edges--they knew the type of tool they needed, they made exactly that. The stem has a vaguely Early Archaic look, but note those extra large percussion flakes that form the body of the piece--that's Woodland-style knapping. Neat piece, lifetime guaranteed real. Shipping is $6.00, combined shipping with other pieces if you buy more than one piece from my store. I welcome checks, cash, or M.O.s, but please note I do not take paypal--Roy A.
