So what happened to this Wayne County, Kentucky, find? The base was set up to flute, a 'striking platform' was 'built' where the Paleo knapper knapped a flat spot, a beginning--or a flat base where a long flute could be channeled up the face--and you have to question which face was going to get the main (or first) flute. Personally, I think it was going to be fluted on the side with the cortex, the reverse face being a bit too smooth. Hey, I'm NOT a knapper: a couple of the best authenticators, Jerry Dickey and Dwain Rogers ARE, they know how flint works( chips), and use that knowledge to study & authenticate. Myself, I prefer to study & learn from observation...plus I don't want to put out an eye .Off topic there, but study this Paleo 'reject', there are countless things to learn from it--it's 1&9/16" in length, either Hornstone or Sonora, a case could be made for being either flint. Next, figure out what the final purpose of the piece might have been, was it converted into a drill form, or was something else going on. One lateral edge is ground, the other is not--it's real, it's still muddy from whatever Monticello, Ky, creek the finder was walking. Wash it or leave it as-is, your choice. Shipping is $7.00, checks, cash, or M.O.s are the ONLY three ways I take payments--Roy A.
