Out of the former "Indian Hill Museum" in Bone Gap, Illinois, Norman Reid (finder and proprietor of the small museum) marked the piece as being found in Edwards County, Illinois, 1955--whether you wand to term it a 'red banded slate' or 'Pipestone', it's one of those sedimentary stones in that cluster of rock types. Length is slightly under 3&3/4" by 1&1/16" wide--it's slightly flattened so the 'height' is just over 3/4". One end is slotted to each face, the other end shows use wear, some salvage--why the Mid Archaic culture hunter didn't fully groove that second end, is a question I'm not sure anyone could answer--you can see where they ground that end (both faces) back about a half inch. You'll find more on "Tie-on" Bannerstones in Dave Lutz's " The Archaic Bannerstone" book--neat piece. Shipping is $7.00, checks or M.O>s welcomed. Sorry, I do not use paypal--Roy A.
