Tape measure (caliper, actually) measurements: 7&1/8"--bit width is 5&13/16"--max thickness measured on the natural end of the spade. NOTE: the spade is not broken, the Mississippian Culture maker used every possible bit of length he could squeeze out of a large slab of Mill Creek Chert. Not only is the piece extra thin, it's also much wider than your standard spade--why they made it so large, well, it's a bit late to ask, probably goes back to the 1250--1400 BP high period of the Mississippian culture. The find comes from Jackson or other area Illinois County--there were no tags on the estate sale--near Champaign, IL. The bit edge has some small modern chips as the photos will show--you really see the patina change where the fresh under-surface flint is exposed. Great piece, lifetime guaranteed authentic. I pay the shipping, and payment is to be by check or M.O. as I do not use paypal--Roy A.
