Did the Paleo knapper try for a flute that was " too deep", or was this just the way the "platform" built on the basal edge worked out, it sent the flute strike into the 'heart' of the blade? Likely there are some pretty good knapping aficionados out there who could 'dissect' what went wrong, but to state the obvious, the flute took a dive from one face over to the back, it snapped the blade the Clovis knapper had built. The rounded leading edge is a dead give-away. More times than not even a 'mis-strike' like this would have ended up as a hafted scraper, you conserved flint, but not here-- the leading edge is simply too sharp, it wasn't used (as a scraper)...did he just abandon the piece, start over, or throw it as far as he could (along with a few choice words)? It's some ten thousand years too late to ask. The piece is out of another S.W. Indiana collection, going in THIS S.W. Indiana collection--a fine example. $7 shipping, and checks or M.O>s are welcomed. Sorry--no paypal-type electronic payments--Roy A.
