A very small S.W. Indiana collection, a family that picked up about anything they found, anything 'out-of-the-ordinary' on the small site that was across the road from their Gibson County, Indiana, home. Two cultures were all I saw represented: Hopewell (in very small numbers) and Mid-to-Late Archaic occupation (Blunts & dart points) /one of those two villages must have found a use for fossils, brought them home. This small (1&1/2" by 7/8") coiled-up fossil (Snail, or a tiny coiled snake?) had what looks like all the organic material replaced by silicate--quartz. Was it a prehistoric shell dweller, or something else--you might find out with some research, but what any of us would find interesting is that the bottom of the piece shows extensive use-polish--that's not a natural polish, it's human-made. So what were the Mid Archaic peoples using the stone for? Speculation is about all any of us have--personally, I would think it was a leather working tool, the bottom is just too highly polished for any other use I can bring to mind. Neat piece. $6.00 shipping, checks, cash, or M.O>s welcomed. Sorry, I do not use paypal--Roy A.
