Every time I've pulled this point from the frame of Norman Reid Edwards County, Illinois, points I've questioned what BEST to call it--the base is a Dovetail base (split Dovetail), but being made off a flake every other detail gives you a "Wait a minute" moment. All, and I do mean all I've come up with is that the point was a 'practice point' for a young knapper--it's authentic in every possible detail, but a flint scrap (2&1/4" by 1&7/16") of Cobden Flint was used, not a bifacial blade or a Cobbs Knife preform. Too, there is no basal grinding or edge bevel from multiple sharpening of the blade. Did the Early Archaic 'student' get a few uses from the hafted knife, then graduate to better flint? That's about all that seems to make sense. The piece was glued to a frame or board at one time (for display at Mr.Reid's Indian Hill Museum), so you'll see some glue spots on the edges--a water 'soak' will remove that glue if you decide to. Interesting piece, I think. Shipping is $5.00 with checks or M.O.s welcomed. Sorry, I do not use paypal--Roy A.
