A colorful knife made from "Dark Derby", a flint found in my old hunting grounds of Perry County, Indiana--wish I could say I'd found this 3&15/16" by 1&11/16", half-inch thick blade, but it comes from the Ohio river-found collection of a fellow collector, long since deceased. The tip area shows considerable work polish, a beveled cutting edge--but only off the side of the tip, not down the blade. The base shows a start of a notch, it gives the 'stem area' an almost "Turkey Tail" look, but with most knives, unless they have diagnostic knapping (like beveled blades), it's hard to say which is Early Archaic, which is Late Archaic or later Woodland Period workmanship. The flaking here, I've long assumed it marks the piece as Early Archaic, more pressure chipping than rougher percussion flint flaking of those later cultures. One quick 'aside' that's neat--the area where this flint is found has old wagon (& Model-T) roads--hardly more than what they are now, hiking trails. Flint blocks--such as the raw material for this knife-- were used to PAVE those country roads. You can't hike the trails without seeing a few TONS of flint...what a trip, every step there's flint.
