From a basket of artifacts, a family farm collection in S.W. Indiana, this one was the surprise, buried under broken tips and bases. I can't be sure if the finder wasn't aware of how unusual the piece is, but that's what I suspect--a "Well the tip isn't there". Good grief, man, for a Lost Lake that still has considerable blade length (1&15/16" total length), there was still excellent beveled cutting edge. There is almost no use wear you can feel on the blunted tip, though, so you have to wonder what the Early Archaic maker was thinking--width is 1&7/16", a bit of the stage one width removed as the piece was sharpened, and to tell you how much larger the blade started it's still a full 3/8" thickness. Those numbers, combined with that wide base (ground, but shows ancient wear), the hafted knife was well over 4" in length as it was first made. That thickness may have been the reason the piece was not sharpened to a narrow tip--the blade was simply getting too close to the medial ridge. If I understand knapping experts, what would be left would be almost a thick drill if the ancient hunter had tried for a sharp point. What he made was a serviceable tool. Every detail is guaranteed authentic, period. Shipping is $6.00 with checks or M.O.s welcomed. Sorry, I do not use paypal--Roy A.
