A nice piece of Burlington, strongly patinated---and from the look of the tip it was somewhat heat treated to harden the chert. The maker of the Osceola made a tip salvage to fashion a burin--sharp, trust me, and old flaked, it's Early Archaic-made salvage. The piece is from a mixed Illinois and Missouri collection, ex G.Noel. Length is 2&3/8" by 1&5/16", 5/16" max thickness. The end of one basal tang has a quartz crystal inclusion--like the piece of the center of a geode--accidental? Not a chance. While there is some grinding in the notches there is basically no grinding to the auriculate base. These are one of the 'sometimes ground, sometimes not' Early Archaic point forms--makes me wonder if the Osceolas were moving closer to the Mid Archaic than a 'true' Early Archaic. Authentic point, period. Shipping is $6.00, checks or M.O>s are welcomed. Sorry, I do not use paypal--Roy A.
