At 3&9/16" the piece is long for a Waubesa, width is 1&1/2', and the thickest measure is only 5/16" thickness. Out of a St. Claire County, Illinois, collection, really, really patinated. There is more color variation to the chert than Burlington Chert--more what Illinois Lithics shows as Bailey Chert--more "waxy" than Burlington, more color. The stem edges on this Hopewell variety are lightly ground, and an interesting feature is the tip" polished smooth from some work application--see the close up pic; you can feel how the tip was buffed against some smooth surface (to polish it). As narrow as the tip is, that's not much of a work surface for a scraper, but it definitely had a purpose. Note a shaft scraper is indented on one blade edge, rounded and work polished. One barb is pretty well intact, the opposite barb had an underside chip fractured away--minor damage, but you know in advance. there are some very tiny flakes around the piece that look to be 'contact dings' from careless handling--they're minor, but they show how the piece was handled & stored over the decades. Note: I was the first to ever wash the Waubesa, a light scrub with only water--if there is any dirt left, blame me. Shipping comes with the list price, checks or M.O.s are welcomed. Sorry, I do not use paypal--Roy A.
