Iron deposits in the Mill Creek Chert must have made knapping this Late ARchaic Culture REd Ochre blade a challenge--almost hard to recognize this as the same chert the big Mississippian Spades are made from, but if you've ever had a chance to hunt a flint source--a creek with a chert bed, there are multiple grades of most flints/ cherts, ancient flint gatherers took home what they judged 'best'...so maybe this 4&7/16" by 1&1/2--3/8" thick Turkey Tail Preform worked better than I'd expect. To carry raw flint (or preforms) from Mill Creek or Ferne Cliffe back to Wayne County, Illinois, where this piece was found you wouldn't waste effort on flint that was only going to become crude scrapers, you'd think--heavy, hard work crossing streams, climbing over downed timber with a sack of flint on your back. The blade has almost no basal edge grinding, the blade and the base about equal dullness--the thinness of the blade will impress you, that's certain.
