A St. Claire County, Illinois, find, Burlington Chert, and highly heat hardened. The iron oxides really changed the white flint to a 'ruddy' color. You can still see the white fossils n the chert as you look it over. Length is 4&1/2" by 3", the center thickness is 5/8". The edges may shave some slight dulling, but definitely not dulled from heavy use (as a knife)--likely there were a number of other blades 'cached' with this one. As it was an estate sale piece I didn't get that much additional provenance--you always wish there were some labels on a case, but too often, you get the town near which a piece was found, and that's about it. What either of us end up doing is judging the blade based on patina and style (Hopewell Culture, I'm supposing). Shipping is $9.00 with checks or M.O.s (cash is always welcomed), but I do not use paypal-type payment services--Roy A.
