Good flint writes its own story--all I have to do is fill in a few 'blanks'--in this case length--2&1/8", 11/16" across the expanded/ flared base, and 3/8" max thickness to the Indiana Hornstone. The piece comes from a Tipton County, Indiana, area collection. The patina, the 'toning' of the hornstone is no brainer. While there is no damage the piece should show a fracture plane where freeze-thaw action lifted s flake off the shoulder. When water gets into the natural flaws (fault lines), expands, a very smooth fracture plane is left (see the close up). That keeps the price more reasonable, and also shows the authenticity--patina. The drill blade shows excellent knapping skill, the basal edge show some--not greatly ground, but a definitely ground basal edge--I'm unable to say for certain that the piece was Early Archaic Culture, but after the early Archaic basal edge grinding wasn't too common--that cultural affiliation is where I'd place the piece.
