With a ground basal edge I'm going to stick with "Pinetree Cornernotch" as a classification, although someone else might be more inclined to call the dart a Kirk (with grinding)you have e Early Archaic timeframe, so use whichever group suits you (once you own the piece, lol). The find comes from Vanderburgh County, Indiana--the flint may be our local West Franklin Chert, or something quite similar. Sometimes (using Tony DeRegnaucourt's advice) you go by where the piece was found, the local flint sources & uses, to determine what flint you're looking at. His advice from 25 years past, his book "Midwest Chert Types" I still find the best available reference when I'm trying to understand what a flint might be...and how it got here. Case in point, if this piece were Hopewell, well, ALL bets are off: they traded to get material from everywhere. Okay, a fossil or organic bit exfoliated from the upper edge of this Cornrnotch (1&13/16" by 1&1/4"; 1/4" thickness)-see the iron particles that adhered to the "vug" (cavity). Patination is excellent, tip is needle-like. Shipping is the $8.00 USPS minimum for a small box, and payments are taken only by cash, checks, or M.O. Sorry, I do not use paypal--Roy A.
