Was the Mid-to-Late Archaic maker trying to 'stylize' something (or someone)? There had to be a reason to make that hump on the one face. There are any number of possible reasons behind the form--what was suggested to me yesterday was pregnancy...guess that old friends' suggestion is as good as any other, we sure aren't going to ask the maker after 3500 or more years since the piece was made--if the piece is a plummet, I've always suspected these pieces were secured in a small net bag, for use as a bola--it doesn't seem sufficient (the groove) to tie a plummet to a 'twirled' throwing instrument. Length is very slightly over 3" by 1&1/8-1&3/16" depending on which side you measure first. The stone is a low grade of Hematite--even my metal detector doesn't react too much to the iron content--but it IS hematite (iron ore). Density is less than you'd expect from the stone. The piece was said to be found in St. Claire County, Illinois, over towards the Mississippi River, far west side of the state. The groove ring is very well incised--the plummet--or pendant, whichever it is, is authentic in all regards. Shipping is $6.00, checks or M.O>s are welcomed. Sorry, I do not use paypal--Roy A.
