Not perfect, and that's okay--it's real. The piece, an Early Archaic Heavy Duty point, came from a collection or points found in (or near) Macoupin County--the guy bought some points, but this point would be correct for the flint's distribution range. Now, it it a form of Crescent Quarry Chert, or is it Payson Flint (as I suspect)--good question, but it'd take someone more familiar with these two area cherts than myself--great piece of flint 2&5/8" by 1&3/8", only 5/16" max thickness. While one barb is use-damaged, the base is not broken--this is the way the 7500BP knapper fashioned it. All his effort went into the blade, and you can see a thicker edge where there should have been a basal lobe--he ran short of flint. It's sort of like carving Mt. Rushmore and not leaving enough stone to make the nose. Here, you can feel that the basal corner was ground smooth, and both sides of the stem have the correct flute for a Heavy Duty, but how the piece was hafted, how firmly the knife blade attached, you have to wonder. It would seem you would need a huge ball of sinew to haft the piece, so much that it'd be 'clunky'. Give the knapper credit, though, the pressure flaking on the blade is superior workmanship. All-in-all a fine example of a Heavy Duty--a point type I also collect. Shipping is $6.00, checks or M.O.s welcomed, however I do not use paypal--Roy A.
