You ask yourself "Why is he selling this Hardin so cheap?" The question is valid--I started off wondering why a Hardin, even one in it's 'late stages' would have a rounded tip--come on, an Early Archaic knapper knew how to make a Hafted Scraper (Blunt)--he knew how to narrow the blade if he wanted a sharp tip. There wasn't a huge blade left to resharpen, but for a 7500BP hunter, tools were what kept you alive, you used them until lost or exhausted--this Hardin wasn't exhausted quite yet (nearly 2" by 1&1/4"). Under sunlight--first--then under the 30x Jarlink loop, finally the 60x side of the Jarlink (sorry for the advertisement, but these $10 loops are a MUST--find one online, lots of sellers out there). Sunlight showed a few modern chips that could be written off as farm damage, but that 60x, using the intense light they build-in, that high of magnification showed metal scraping on the edge of the fresh chips. I have no way to know if the deceased previous owner rechipped the piece, whether he found it in the Mattoon, Illinois, area, or bought it from someone. You can study the Burlington Chert point, OR have it restored--nice point before someone messed with it, and with some Keith Etchison restoration it'd be welcome in my personal collection--still a fine Hardin. $6.00 shipping, checks, cash or M.O>s welcomed, but I do not use paypal--Roy A.
