Off a family garden site in Macon County, Illinois--there, you'd expect a white Burlington Chert, but what the garden tiller brought up from that mostly Adena Culture site was dark Excello Flint, very dark blue with creamy inclusion bands. Other pieces ranged to a dull black--classic Excello Flint from the western part of Illinois, if you check on "Illinois Lithic Materials" site (excellent reference if you like studying flint that's found in each state). This long Adena is slightly over 3&7/8" by 1&3/8", and 3/8" or slightly over on the single thickest center ridge spot--as you move away from that slight stack the blade become very, very proportional in thickness, 5/16".The stem is edge-ground, looks like the Adena hunter removed an edge flake on the stem for better fit to the knife's handle--deliberate modification, it's not damage. One lower blade edge shows where the hunter repaired an edge chip from use--he 'cleaned up' a use-made ding. What I'm describing is all, every last chip guaranteed ancient. Off the side of the tip (see close up) is a small gardening-made chip--study the patina difference in that small spot, you'll easily see & understand the overall patina. Shipping is $6.00, checks or M.O.s are the only payments (other than cash) I use & welcome. Questions, please ask. If you have a counter offer, well, please, there is no reason to waste your time,--Roy A.
