Edwards County, Illinois, a grooved axe style that's not a full groove or a three-quarter groove, "late portion of the Early archaic Period" is how I'd describe the time slot. The top of the Axe isn't flat as are the Mid Archaic Axes, but yet does have slight grooving that was the 'accepted method' for the 'height' of the 7500BP Early Archaic. Styles were changing--does that work? Made of a granite with phenocrysts--quartz inclusions-- the big axe measures an almost exact 5" by 3&7/8"--caliper reads 2&1/4" max thickness on the very heel. That the axe was a field find is of no doubt, some farming-made scratches--not terrible, but they're there in places--they're also part of the history of the piece: big stone gets rolled by plowing, simply said. Every detail is guaranteed authentic. Shipping is included with the price, BARELY will fit in a Priority Mail package. I welcome checks or M.O>s, but do not use paypal--Roy A.
