If you ever, ever had a point in your hands where the patina was so unmistakable (as this one), you didn't need to question it, you'll understand the title. If this Rush County, Indiana, Still had had a few more sharpenings of the blade edges it might be more recognizable as a Stilwell, but to cover it's salient points" the basal edge is ground--that alone tells you the piece is early Archaic Culture--that "V" flared base is classic for a Stilwell...now if you expect me to say it's the 'most beautiful chert', sorry, that one I won't attempt. Patina, though, if the point isn't a creek find, it's close to that level of patination. Length is 1&7/8", the width is very slightly over 1&1/2", but the blade is thin, slightly over 1/4" max. Was the blade ever longer, or was this close to a 'stage one' length--that depends on how large the preform chert blade might have been--the patina is all from the 7500BP time slot, but to me, anyway, it appears the blade--the large flake scars nearer the tip--this was very close to 'starting' length. The only damage is at the end of one barb, a very old use-made ding--very common on Stilwells. Payments: I welcome your check--or money order, but I do not use paypal-type services--Roy A.
