There isn't really a 'category' for Late Archaic Stemmed, not in Overstreet, anyway, but you see a slightly contracted stem, edge ground--and a lot of times with a slat stem base, you know there are elements of Eastern Stemmed, Stringtowns, point style in the same 'general characteristics' cluster, they're generally well made. Here, this 'rootbeer chert', it was a super-hard flint, you see 'stacks' that the ancient knapper couldn't eliminate due to the blade already being narrow (2&1/2" by 7/8", and thickness that reaches 1/2")--it's a Lanceolate type blade which is why it's narrow. With a backlight, you can easily guess why the knapper wanted to work a difficult flint, the translucence had to appeal to someone thousands of years back as much as a collector today. Now, does the flint have a more specific name, Tony DeRegnaucourt's chert type book calls it Flint Ridge Moss Agate Variety. I've found it along the Ohio River, but RARELY--this point was from a Kentucky dealer, it's a piece that you see, you want it for your collection. There is likely some soil still in the crevices of the stone--I didn't want to scrub it; the soil, still in those crevices, tells you about where the piece originated. It is guaranteed real in every detail. Shipping is included with the price, nothing additional. I take checks, money orders or cash, but I do not use paypal-type services--Roy A.
