No 'hype', one of the best Spades (Mississippian Culture) I've had the chance to collect. It's made of heavy, heavy use-polished Illinois Kaolin Flint, dead on 5" in length, 3" max width, and 1" max thickness. Both ends show the effects of chopping sandy Wabash River soils, the corn, beans, and squash that were the Mississippian village staples, 1250--1400 common era. Most Miss. peoples used Mill Creek Chert for their spades and hoes, but this artifact is made of the much higher grade Kaolin Flint out of western Illinois--some way it was traded to villages along the Wabash River. The family who found the piece didn't record whether this was a Gibson County, Indiana or a White County, Illinois, find, so that "Lower Wabash River Valley" is the provenance I'll pass to the next owner--FINE PIECE, real. Shipping is $11, Priority Mail. I welcome checks or M.O.s but do not use paypal-type payments--Roy A.
