Did the Paleo knapper try for too deep a flute, or was this just the way the "platform" built on the basal edge worked out? Likely there are some pretty good knapping aficionados out there who could 'dissect' what went wrong, but to state the obvious, the flute took a dive from one face over to the back, it snapped the blade the Clovis knapper had built. The rounded leading edge is a dead give-away. More times than not even a 'mis-strike' like this would have ended up as a hafted scraper, you conserved flint, but not here, the leading edge is simply too sharp...did he just drop the piece, start over, or throw it as far as he could (along with a few choice words)? It's some ten thousand years too late to ask. The piece is out of another S.W. Indiana collection, going in THIS S.W. Indiana collection--a fine example. A good weekend to all--Roy A.
