Length of this Indiana Madison point--Mississippian Culture, 1250--1400 common era, is an excellent 1&11/16" by 3/34" width and 3/16" max thickness. It comes from the Vanderburgh County, Indiana, area--once the site of very large Miss. village until something dispersed a thousand people to sites farter west, down the Ohio River in riverbottoms on both sides of the river west of Evansville, Indiana (and Henderson, Kentucky)--you know something more about the area some artifact comes from, you understand more of how it was made, used, and lost. The flint here is kind of a puzzle, it's possibly a nodular flint a knapper found along the river, utilized--it doesn't show the color of Indiana Hornstone or other small deposit local flints. The other possibility I've considered is that the flint was a rock used as a campfire ring, accidental heat altering--the sort of "purplish color" would fit for a flint that had seen heat 'tempering'.
