During usage something the axe struck snapped the piece right at the heel, more than a 'slightly hard' hit would have been necessary, but rather than abandon the axe the user designed, pecked and polished a new groove that was closer to the bit. Did he redo the bit as well--personally I don't think so, the bit, the 'lines' leading to the bit seem to 'original'. There are a couple tiny chips on the bit edge (usage), but they're very minor. A trace of the original groove ring is still--pictures should show the remaining portions of what was the center of the original groove--really interesting, guaranteed real, work--you don't often come across an axe salvaged this way. This piece, Perry County, Indiana, has been in my collection since '99, purchased from the finder. It's made from a quartz-type stone cobble off the Ohio River: 3&5/16" by 2&7/8", 1&1/4" max thickness.
