75670--Two matched Illinois points, COLOR
The collector who either found or bought these two marked the one as Fayette County, Illinois--I'll classify it as a Table Rock as a starting classification--not sure if that's exactly right as neither one has basal grinding, something I expect from Table Rock types--Late Archaic Stemmed works as a 'generic' name for the pair as well--ROUGH chert, but great color.. The reason I use the term 'rough' is that the knapper couldn't get the thickness under 7/16" on the 2&3/8" point. The smaller point, 2&1/16" is 3/8" thick--again, getting a thin preform must have been almost impossible, so the 2500--3500 BP knapper worked with what he had. The longer blade either has a higher iron content or it was close to a cook fire--red oxides really make the piece. Both are authentic, period.
