82191--3.8" Indiana Turkey Tail

A Gibson County, Indiana, Turkey Tail, very long (almost 3&7/8") by a wide 1&5/8". The thickness is ONLY 5/16" max, a very, very thin blade. Is the flint a grade of Indiana Hornstone, or is it a form of Spencer County's Holland Flint (chalcedony, actually)--my thought is that the flint is the "Blue Holland" that occasionally is seen. Here, this point, the stem was worked to the outer edge of the large flint preform, there wasn't quite enough flint to make the traditional pointed Turkey Tail base--the Late Archaic (2500BP) knapper smoothed, ground the flat stem basal edge--fitted to a notch in a handle the flat base rested my securely. Not to 'second guess' some ancient knapper, but a pointed base on a stem seems like it was guaranteed to split a wooden handle--obviously they had other thoughts as most Turkey Tails have a pointed stem. One note: the upper blade edge has a use-polished notch--you can run a fingertip through the notch and feel the work polish--was this for working bone tools, awls and such? It's my best guess. Great patina, 100% guaranteed authentic. Shipping is included with the price and checks or M.O.s are how it can be paid for. Sorry, I do not use paypal-type services--Roy A.
