I pay the shipping cost on this heavy, heavy granite Celt--Illinois, Bond (or area) county. The piece is 5&5/16" by roughly 3&1/8" across the bit. At 1&7/8" max thickness you have to wonder how--if it ever had a rounded heel--they (Woodland Culture, likely Hopewell based on other artifacts in the collection)-- could have broken a granite heel of that thickness--the density of the stone would make that very difficult have happen. The other way of thinking of it is that this was the full length as-made-it was never longer. The 'rim' of the heel is slightly dulled, so even if the heel DID break, they salvaged what was still a perfectly serviceable artifact. One note here: if you view the fine bit as 'not dinged up', it makes sense that this was the way the piece was made. A few light plow scratches tell you the find came from a farm field--a big piece of stone in a farm field, yeah, it should have a few scratches--tells you it's real.
