Out of Crittenden County, the far west of Kentucky, an Ohio River beach find--the finder marked the piece with April of 1977 as the find date. The Buck Creek is a "snap-off stem" type, knapped to the very edge of the starting preform (whether that was a biface blade or a large flint flake I'm not sure, but the flintworker got every bit of length possible into the cutting blade--then he ground that basal edge smooth. Now was the stem thinning flake removed before or after the stem was ground, I think afterwards as the bottom edge of that flake is sharp--it wouldn't be if the 'flute' was before the basal grinding. Length is 2&9/16" by 1&1/2", the blade thickness is barely over 5/16", so that would indicate a skilled knapper, getting his preform thinned exactly as he wanted it. There is one tiny chip on the tip, and it's from ancient use, patinated the same as the body of the hafted knife. I left any dirt the finder of the piece failed to wash, you see the point as it came to me...my typical way of displaying what enters my collection. I like patina. Shipping is $8.00, checks, cash, or money orders are the ONLY three payment forms I take. Sorry, paypal users--Roy A.
