Out of a Hopkins County, Kentucky, collection, but whether the piece was found in Hopkins County, or was found nearer Paducah, where the man previously lived, that is unknown--trying to match-up that fossil laden flint with types found in the area, I've drawn a blank. The material may be something that reached the Ohio River from the Illinois counties--a Kincaide Chert (due to all the fossils present)--that's my best attempt at classifying the material--even looked at a Bailey Chert that was heat treated. When you have one piece in a whole collection, you know the finder lived in more than one location, you draw on every resource you can to identify 'difficult to classify' cherts. Length is 2&13/16" by 1&1/2", barely over 1/4" blade thickness. Being a Motley there is no basal edge grinding, but the sides of the stem are definitely ground. One barb is slightly shorter than the opposite barb, and that's the sum of any damage. Patina is great, the piece is guaranteed real--please note there is a red washed-out stain on one face, it looks like someone once wrote a bit of provenance in a red ink, then decided to remove it--doesn't come off. Shipping is $6.00 with checks or M.O.s welcomed. Sorry, I never ever use paypal--Roy A.
