Length of the granite Mid Archaic Culture (6500BP) Axe is 4&15/16" by 3&9/16"--thickness towards the heel is 1&13/16". Sizable axe, definitely--mounted on a handle your shoulders would feel the 'swing'. It WAS used, though, the bit shows considerable use wear (dulling). Out of the Bond or Montgomery County, Illinois, area, grooved more at the point of contact with the handle than along the sides (you can feel some dulling/ grinding along each face, so you know how the straps that secured head-to-handle were wrapped. Soil acids left the surface both patinated and sort of 'etched'--something the few axes my own sites produced left--it leaves the surface rough as sandpaper...my few axes look just the same, lol. Every detail is real, only a few minor plow scratches for so large an axe--photos should show the minor plow 'contact marks'.
