I bought this Kirk Cornernotch from a local doctor's collection a half dozen years back--never really found a reason to pull it from my frames as the anciently repaired tip impact fracture was sort of crude workmanship--yeah, it was a knife, not a projectile, so perfect symmetry wasn't that important; the cutting edge was. Today, putting the piece under my Ott Lite (natural spectrum), I saw what I'd been missing. Look at the blade edges, note the color change (patina change) along one lower side...next step was a $10 "Jarlink" 30/ 60 power lighted loop. Understand, not every point in the doctors' collection was like that, but some seller took advantage off the man; they pawned-off a rechipped point, very likely thinking he'd never catch (or suspect) he'd been 'taken'. What shows under higher magnification is what looks like freshly broken glass--white 'crystals' where light reflects off the rechipping. One further test, hold the piece against a light and instead of the yellow, patinated (and somewhat translucent) edge--where you see it's dark, the light doesn't come through, that's rechipping. Yours, mine, everyone's collection takes a lot of effort to overcome bad pieces--too many of them out there, so always make sure you get a guarantee when you buy something. This point, restoration is about all that can be done for it--cover-over the rechipping--and label it as 'restored'. Roy A.
