What exactly was it? I've looked at the piece for more than a year, still not sure. What I CAN tell you is that it comes from Sangamon County, Illinois--it's heat treated Burlington/ Crescent Quarry Chert--the heat treating really brought out the iron oxides that turned the color, well...red--and glossy. Was that basal 'tang' original, or was that fashioned as part of the conversion process--your guess is as good (or better) than mine. Some artifacts, once you've established they're real, the best 'analysis' you come up with is a "That's neat". Length is 3&5/16" by 1&7/16"--at the base the blade gets to 7/16" (above the basal tang).
