Was the auriculate base point/ blade Paleo (based on the base), or was it a preform for some other point type? I lean to Paleo based on both the fact that the base was auriculate, and that there is a shallow flute ascending from the center of the base on one face. Early Archaic bifacial blades were not shaped that way, particularly the basal edge, and later cultures--until the Hopewell, didn't make much use of bifaces (see North Blades, but their shape is much different). This Knox County, Indiana, blade is in the Holland Chert family--not showing any basal grinding I have to assume it's an 'early stage' preform. Stacks in the flint itself made knapping is difficult, so this may have remained in the 'kit' as a knife, perhaps to be finished-out as a lance tip if necessary. One fact to back that up is that the lower lateral edges ARE ground--not much more than 5/8", but edge grinding was Paleo work Length is 3&1/16" by slightly over 1&1/2"--thickness spot reaches 7/16" on a stack, but the blade is mostly 3/8" thickness. The piece is guaranteed authentic in every detail. Shipping is $8.00, and checks or M.O>s are the ways I take payments. Sorry, I do not use paypal-type services--Roy A.
