At 3&5/16" by 1&3/16" the Dixon has a pretty substantial blade--it's strength came from the 1/2" thick medial ridge. Was the basal edge part of the edge of the large flint preform the Late Archaic-to-Woodland hunter worked, or was there a stem which snapped--good question. My answer is based on the flaking pattern of the basal edge--I think this was the outer edge of that starting blade--that is, the knapper tried for maximum length to his hafted knife. He got that needed cutting edge length, he fashioned the shoulders, but there was almost no additional length to fashion a long, pointed Dixon-type stem. The patina confirms it, this wasn't a "break". The piece is out of Green County, Indiana, 100% guaranteed real--flint (I think) is a form of Attica Flint--Indiana Green Chert.
