When you didn't have plastics, practically every needed tool that wasn't flint or stone, was bone--and usually the thicker legbones of deer or birds like turkeys. A split legbone could be easily (still time consuming) sharpened with any piece of sandstone is 2&1/2", sharpened to a needle tip. The finder spent a lot of time, I was told, hunting sites along the Ohio River, Henderson and Union County, Kentucky, so this awl is most likely from one site or another along the Ohio. Being a bird bone, it was hollow, so it's both very hard and light--if you were working to make hut coverings or deerskin clothing, you needed an awl that was very sharp--and stayed sharp--the work polish to the bone is a gloss, so it saw considerable use. Neat piece, real. Shipping is $8.00 with checks or M.O.s (or cash) welcomed, but I do not take paypal-type payments--Roy A.
