Form is Mid Archaic Culture three-quarter groove style--some 6500BP--the same peoples who made Benton Points (knives), and Atl Atl dart points, plus thousands--make that millions-- of Hafted Scrapers (blunts)--this was their axe form, and one of the best I've been owned.
Material is a dense granite, patinated, authentic, iron (mineral) stained--5.5" by 3" by 1.6"-both top and bottom faces are flattened, good over-all polish to the granite, but not excessive, even on the bit area, although the polish is heavier on the bit area than anywhere else. The bit itself is not sharp edged--not use-dulled, but made in a more 'blunted' fashion.
The piece was provenanced as coming from St. Claire County, Illinois.
Condition: there are no farming-made scratches that I've spotted. One very small ancient repair spot shows on the top corner of the bit, a very slight dimple.
Every detail is guaranteed authentic, period. Shipping is $10, Priority Mail. I welcome checks or M.O>s, but please note my store does not use paypal--Roy A.
