Out of Vanderburgh County, Indiana, a Mississippian Era (call it 1400 or so in our time) Elbow Pipe. At first I thought the pipe was field-damaged, but as you run a fingertip over the somewhat "partial" bowl you'll find it was ground smooth by the pipe smoker--those edges are really ground smooth. There had to be a 'sentimental value' or a new pipe could have been made. On the end where a thin reed was used as a stem, once again, the breaks are ground smooth. One note--I ran a pin through the 'draw hole' as it was blocked by dirt--even opened up the draw is VERY LITTLE...seems you'd get light headed if you smoked the thing for any length of time, but then I don't know the strength of the tobacco (?) they were smoking. I can guarantee the pipe is real, but as for what they smoked, well, you decide. 1&1/4" height by 7/8" width, a campfire-baked white Kaolin clay--Mississippians would search out pockets of white clay in the banks of the Ohio River--I've walked along too many river "high walls", seen the clay pockets they exploited. Neat piece ! Shipping is $9.00 with checks or M.O>s welcomed. Sorry, I do not use paypal-type services--Roy A.
