The point is out of an east-central Indiana collection, but with this type of glossy Sonora Flint I expect the 'true' origin was north central Kentucky--Sonora Flint country. Sure, there are some 1500--1800 year past chips on the base of the stem, but on the "bright side" they show proper patination...read that as "This piece is guaranteed 100% real." At one time there was an I.D. tag on the center of the body, the slight residue of glue tells me the auction center removed the provenance. Damn it, I wish they wouldn't do that, but most auction houses don't stop to consider a point's history as being that important. I do. Length is exactly 3" by nearly 1&7/8"--and nearly 3/8" max thickness in the hafting area. The Bullseye is formed of the caramel-color seen on high grade Sonora Flint--and the inner bullseye is the maroon color formed by the hematite in Sonora--GREAT color. The price reflects the ancient basal damage, the outer corners of the stem--hafting wasn't that affected or the Hopewell knapper or the hunter would have re-fashioned the stem. Too, possibly the angled flake on the stem was the outer edge shape of the starting flint blade (a North Blade) the Snyders hunter notched--often a knapper was working to get as large a blade as possible; if too little flint remained to form a 'perfect' stem, then as long as the knife head could be hafted, that was "workable".
