I wanted to slip away for a few days before schools starts back up. so we took off to Colorado. When the girls were little, we visited Royal Gorge. In 2014 a fire broke out and before firemen could arrive, it burned the park to the ground, all except the bridge. They have built it back with Gondolas and zip lines. The train along the Arkansas 1000 ft. below still runs through the canyon. I have always wanted to stop at the Folsom museum. While they had a lot of info on the self-taught cowboy (George McJunkin) that made the discovery of Folsom points in context with extinct bison antiguas bones, the museum makes more of a connection to the bison than the discovery of the Folsom points. They have several examples of skulls but only modern examples of Folsom points. While in the area, it is worth your time to stop at Capulin, an extinct volcano. Take the hike around the rim to view the lands where Goodnight and Chism grazed their cattle. It started snowing and sleeting on the drive to Pike's Peak so that was interesting. Pike did not believe it could be climbed when he was there, but that was November of 1806, so a little late in the year. He is credited with the first U.S. alpine ascent when he and the team summitted Mt. Rosa. Even then they would have probably all perished if not for the luck of finding a hot spring in a cave during their descent from the mountain. The drive up the Arkansas River to Salida is well worth the time. This was the major East West trade route for Native Americans for millennia. Which brings us to the Oct. 2, show in Fairview, OK. There will be a lot of Arkansas River material at the show. Hope to see you there!
