A "No brainer" from Indiana (Vincennes area)--Mid Archaic (6500BP), three-quarter groove, made from a black and white granite. Caliper reads 4&1/16" by2&3/8", exactly 2" thick on the front groove ridge--the heel is slightly more narrow as there is some ancient use-made dings. Those aside, the thing the axe has going for it is that there aren't plow scratches marring the surface as many hardstone artifacts that are field-found. The bit was not made to be a sharp edge, and that may be due to the intended use--it's more than a little late to ask the ancient maker his intent, but my 'take' is that the piece wasn't for tree cutting, it had a specific purpose--you feel the bit, you know the piece was heavily used. Absolutely every detail is lifetime guaranteed authentic. Too bad it was removed, but some residue of label glue on the flat top 'face' must have had additional provenance--you see that slight dark rectangle, you know the piece was once provenanced. The last owner didn't want to give away his site info, I suppose. Shipping--I pay it. PAYMENT: I welcome checks, cash, or money orders, but please note I do NOT use paypal--Roy A.
