Viewing the shape, my first appraisal would be that this Union Co. Illinois blade is a Paleo preform, lacking only the thinning and a flute to form a Clovis point--as with any piece that's being studied, every set of knapping characteristics have to be studied,i.e. does the chipping 'qualify' as Paleo? Did Paleo hunters make tools from this particular flint, how would the piece be finished-out when the knapper was working from a REALLY THICK (11/16") preform? Some flakes, the outre pas long flakes are evident, they reach past the middle of the blade--a Paleo specialty, said to only be possible due to the use of Mammouth ivory billets--described by knappers as "harmonic resonance", vibration, in more simple terms, it traveled across the flint and longer flakes popped free. Not being a knapper myself, I can pass along what people with experience have told me, but I still look at this 3&1/16" by 2" Preform and wonder how it was going to be thinned enough (without becoming too narrow) to form a Clovis. I can "see" the basic Clovis shape, it's there, but getting to that next step, that'd be interesting. Sorry, this is a flint I've not come across before, can't identify the material--extremely hard flint, and the edges are still sharper than I'd expect. The blade is out of an old family collection, guaranteed authentic. Shipping comes with the list price, and checks are much appreciated--Roy A.
