Everyday tools from sites in McLean County, Kentucky--ALL made of Hornstone of various grades--anyone who thinks there is only one form of hornstone hasn't bothered to go to a source creek, see every imaginable form of this flint all jumbled together, nodular, lense (tabular), fossil bearing, light hornstone, dark, weathered-out or seemingly freshly broken. So, that's the (short form) explanation for the color variance on these big blades. Too, factor-in thousands of years of weathering or bedded in a limestone (calcium rich) rockshelter, well, you get the idea on patina. From handling these might have a few small dark fresh-made edge chips, but even those let you contrast authentic patination. The big piece at the photo top looks like it was a spade-like tool,3&7/16" by 2&1/2". Most of these were meant to be knives, in some cases single-use tools, but others show secondary chipping that'd indicate continuous use. Only the center piece is bifacial, an indicator it had a purpose (preform) other than as a knife. Age factor: some may be Paleo, and definitely NONE were as late as Woodland, so figure the "newest" were Late Archaic, no less than 2500BP--there are no Woodland blade forms, and even Turkey Tail makers used bifacial blade forms which as not at all similar to these, so that's the basis of dating the pieces. There are enough Uniface forms that I expect a decent number are from one of the Paleo peoples, either Clovis or Beaver Lake/ Cumberland. Shipping comes with the price, checks are highly encouraged---Roy A.
