Some finds, you first get in your collection, you start immediately trying to "type" or classify them..."It looks like a..." or "It's not a..." Somewhere or other you have to start with what DOES it have for characteristics. On this Bifurcate the base is heavily ground, so that tells you it's Early Archaic--rule out the Buzzard Roost points. Barbs (one is intact, one is nicked) are hooked down in a sharp angle, so cornernotched types immediately come to mind--and combined with the overall pressure (not percussion) flaking, yo know you're solidly in the Early Archaic. Now yo have the 'puzzler' features,: blade edges are NOT serrated, and the blunted tip. Kirk Stemmed Bifurcates almost always serrated the cutting edges, and if there is a blunted Kirk out there I've yet to see it. This base clearly matches LeCroy Early Archaic types, the "spread" of the basal lobes, the grinding, plus the very long flake scars extending to (and past) the medial ridge. As almost all LeCroy points were sharpened until exhausted, what would the early stage points look like? This has to be--other than the tip--what the blade of a LeCroy looked like before repeated sharpening. The 2&9/16" by 1&3/16", 1/4" thick Saint Louis Green Flint point comes from a creek in the Union or Webster County, Kentucky, region, lifetime guaranteed authentic. Shipping is $4.00 (inside the U.S.), and checks or M.Os. are much appreciated--Roy A.
